Ferguson Zones Made Easy: How to Choose Between UVB 5.0 and 10.0 for Any Reptile Species

Desert scene with two basking lizards, cacti, and sunlit cliffs. Sign reads "Ferguson Zone 4: High-UV Desert Specialists." UVI 4.5.

Ferguson Zones are the gold standard for matching UVB lighting to a reptile’s natural needs, but they are often simplified to “low sun = 5.0 bulb, high sun = 10.0 bulb.” In reality, Ferguson Zones tell you which UV Index your reptile should experience at the basking spot, and that depends more on lamp type, distance, and enclosure design than the bulb number alone.

What Are Ferguson Zones?

Named after Dr. Gary Ferguson’s field studies, Ferguson Zones group reptiles by the UV Index they typically bask under in the wild.

  • Zone 1: Shade dwellers and crepuscular species (leopard geckos, many snakes) — background UVI 0–0.7, basking often under 1.0.

  • Zone 2: Occasional baskers (some boas, water dragons) — background UVI 0.7–1.0, basking 1.0–2.6.

  • Zone 3: Regular open‑sun baskers (bearded dragons, many tortoises) — background UVI 1.0–2.6, basking up to 7.4.

  • Zone 4: Extreme sun lovers (uromastyx, some tegus) — background UVI 2.6–7.4, basking peaks over 7.4.

The goal is to replicate that gradient: high UVI at the basking point, lower in transition zones, and near zero in shade hides.

How UVB 5.0 and 10.0 Bulbs Fit Ferguson Zones

“5.0” and “10.0” are marketing shorthand for the bulb’s relative UVB output when measured at a standard distance.

  • 5.0 / 6% bulbs are designed to deliver moderate UVI at close range, ideal for Zones 1–2 or shaded Zones 3.

  • 10.0 / 12% bulbs are stronger and can deliver higher UVI at greater distances, suiting Zones 3–4 and mesh‑top enclosures where UV drops off.

However, the bulb number is just a starting point. Always verify with a UVI meter because mesh, height, and age all change the real output.

Ferguson Zone 1: Shade and Crepuscular Species

Examples: Leopard geckos, crested geckos, many snakes, nocturnal frogs.

Recommended basking UVI: Very low, often 0–1.0, with background under 0.7.

Best bulb choice:

  • Low‑output 5.0 or even 2.0 fluorescent tubes mounted high above mesh.

  • No 10.0—too strong for natural low‑UV needs, especially if the basking spot is close to the lamp.

Layout: Place the UVB tube over the warm side, with plenty of dense foliage so the reptile can choose shade; target UVI readings under 1.0 at the warmest hide entrance.

Ferguson Zone 2: Occasional Bathers

Examples: Many boas, some colubrids, water dragons, forest tortoises.

Recommended basking UVI: 0.7–3.0, with background 0.7–1.0.

Best bulb choice:

  • Standard 5.0 T8 or T5 tube at medium distance (25–35 cm below mesh).

  • 10.0 only if the basking spot is 40+ cm below a mesh lid and tests low enough.

Layout: UVB over a warm branch or rock, with clear gradient to shade areas; aim for UVI 1–2 at the basking point.

Ferguson Zone 3: Open‑Sun Regular Bathers

Examples: Bearded dragons, blue tongue skinks, many sulcatas and Russian tortoises.

Recommended basking UVI: 2.6–7.4, background 1.0–2.6.

Best bulb choice:

  • 10.0 T5 HO above mesh for most setups, especially taller enclosures.

  • 5.0 T5 if the basking spot is close (under 25 cm) and tests in range.

Layout: Strong UVB over the main basking platform, with lower UVI in climbing areas and hides; verify 3–6 UVI at the reptile’s back height.

Ferguson Zone 4: High‑UV Desert Specialists

Examples: Uromastyx, chuckwallas, some tegus.

Recommended basking UVI: Above 7.4 peaks, background 2.6–7.4.

Best bulb choice:

  • High‑output 10.0 or 12% T5 mounted reasonably high to create intense peaks without constant overexposure.

  • 5.0 usually too weak to reach Zone 4 levels at safe distances.

Layout: UVB directly over the hottest basking rock, with escape areas of lower UV; expect UVI 6–10+ at the peak spot, dropping fast to background levels.
